The real estate network also counted 36 Miracle Offices among its ranks in 2011. To earn the status of Miracle Office, every real estate agent in that office must make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®.

The Children’s Miracle Network raises funds to help support the children served by its more than 170 associate hospitals across the United States and Canada. Funds raised by RE/MAX Northern Illinois directly benefit Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a regional center that specializes in providing top medical care for seriously ill children. The hospital provides this care regardless of families’ financial resources.

Laura Ortoleva, a spokesperson for RE/MAX Northern Illinois, said that the real estate network’s goal in 2011 was to raise $ 100,000 for Children’s Memorial Hospital. Charles M. Russell: Watercolorist, a rare exhibition of 16 watercolors by the iconic artist of the 19th century American West, will open at the Sid Richardson Museum on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, and run through Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Admission is free to the museum, which is open daily except major holidays. Visitors from all 50 states and 68 countries have toured the museum at 309 Main Street in historic Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth since its opening in 1982. “Charlie Russell’s watercolors will help people gain a greater appreciation for his skill as an artist,” said Mary Burke, director of the Sid Richardson Museum. “Although he is well known for his oil paintings, experts on Russell consider his watercolors to be among his finest efforts.”

Burke noted that the watercolors complement the museum’s permanent collection of paintings of the 19th century American West by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), and other artists of the same era, amassed by legendary Texas oilman and philanthropist Sid W. Richardson (1891-1959). The museum is recognized as having one of the most significant private collections of Remington and Russell paintings in the United States.

The exhibition at the Richardson Museum is a companion exhibition to the first major retrospective of Russell’s watercolors, Romance Maker: The Watercolors of Charles M. Russell, which also runs from Feb. 11 through May 13, 2012, at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Dr. Rick Stewart, a recognized authority on Russell, curated both exhibitions. Prior to his retirement, he was director and then chief curator of the Carter.

It is appropriate that the Richardson Museum’s 30th anniversary year feature an exhibition uniting the collections of Sid W. Richardson and his close friend, the legendary Fort Worth newspaper publisher, Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879–1955). The collaboration is the legacy of their friendship; in fact, Carter, who also collected Remingtons and Russells, encouraged Richardson to acquire many of the paintings in the Sid Richardson Museum’s collection.

Of the 16 Russell watercolors in the Richardson Museum’s exhibition, eight are on loan from the Amon Carter Museum, and the following eight rarely exhibited works are part of the Richardson Museum’s permanent collection: Roping, ca. 1925-1926; Roping the Renegade, ca. 1883; The Brave’s Return, ca. 1891; Breaking Up the Ring [Breaking Up the Circle], 1900; He Tripped and Fell into a Den on a Mother Bear and Her Cubs, 1910; He Snaked Old Texas Pete Right Out of His Wicky-up, Gun and All, 1905; A Bad One, 1912; and On the Attack, 1901.

The eight watercolors on loan from the Amon Carter Museum are: Crees Meeting Traders, ca. 1896; War Council, ca. 1896; Indian on Horseback, 1907; Indians Sighting Buffalo, ca. 1896; A Piegan Flirtation, ca. 1896; Caught Napping, 1898; Indian Fight, 1898; and Approach of the White Men, 1897.

For the exhibition at the Sid Richardson Museum, to help visitors understand Russell’s creative process, a display will illustrate a series of steps to demonstrate how he painted Indian on Horseback (1907), a work featured in the exhibition. The steps will include 1) the underdrawing, 2) applying general washes, 3) layering of colored washes to define shape, 4) using line for definition, and 5) adding highlights. In addition, “paint outs” of Russell’s watercolor palette will be included.

The museum’s education program offers students an opportunity to learn about the artists’ ideas, lives, and paintings, which reflected life in the American West in late 19th- and early 20th-century America. The Museum Store offers a special selection of gifts and merchandise in the spirit of the West.

The museum is owned and fully funded by the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which Mr. Richardson established in 1947 to support organizations that serve the people of Texas. Foundation directors and staff have sought to fulfill Mr. Richardson’s vision by providing grants to educational, health, human service, and cultural organizations.

Directors of the foundation are Edward P. Bass, chairman, Sid R. Bass, and Lee M. Bass; they are grandnephews of Mr. Richardson. Their mother, Nancy Lee Bass, is director emerita; their father, Perry R. Bass (1914-2006), was Mr. Richardson’s nephew. Pete Geren is president of the foundation.

On Sunday 22nd January the Shorncliffe Trust is launching the European Heritage and Commemoration Initiative, whose main aim is to encourage proactive support and maintenance of the graves and memorials of those who gave their lives fighting for this country in the UK and in Europe.

This initiative is hoping to encourage ordinary people, schools and communities to “adopt” a soldiers grave or memorial long forgotten by friends, family and society. The Trust has taken advice from Royal Parks and Councils who currently maintain the cemeteries that extra support would be welcome.

Chris Shaw, Chairman of the Shorncliffe Trust says “In light of the increasing theft and damage to graves and memorials, we are asking people if they would be willing to act as a surrogate family for those who no longer have visitors to tend their grave. This is a true ‘Big Society’ style project which unites the public with different supportive organisations under one umbrella.”

The launch event will be in two parts, firstly at the grave of Sergeant Baller in Brompton Cemetery, Earls Court and then at the Rifle Brigade Memorial in Victoria, Central London. The Trust will be laying a wooden marker at Sergeant Ballers grave and then laying a wreath at the memorial.

The planned event itinerary is to be as follows:

Many people believe that David Koresh (or the Branch Davidians) were responsible for the deaths of the 74 men, women and children who died in the inferno at Waco on April 19, 1993. This is the story that the FBI put out. It is a lie. The guns they had were legal. The local sheriff investigated and found no basis for complaints against them. These were law-abiding American citizens, even if they thought differently to most other folks. They trusted the US Constitution to ensure their political rights, but they were murdered by agents acting under the authority of the US government. Waco occurred under the presidency of Bill Clinton, with Janet Reno and Wesley Clark in supporting roles. Already back in 1993 the US government demonstrated its contempt for the American people by carrying out a massacre in order to “demonstrate” (on prime time TV) its supposed “authority” (a tactic favored by fascist governments). Following the usurpation of the presidency in 2000 by the psychopath George W. Bush, and the subsequent installation of the insane John Ashcroft as Bush’s Himmler, things became much worse. On 9/11 about forty times as many people were murdered as at Waco. In both cases the murderers have so far gone unpunished.

Waco: The Rules of Engagement is a 1997 documentary directed by William Gazecki about the conflict in 1993 between the Branch Davidians, a non-mainstream Christian group, and the FBI. It was nominated for an Academy Award.

2011 CFPA National Performer of the Year Matt Barkley (41 total touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, 294 passing yards per game) set a single season Pac-12 record with 39 passing touchdowns in twelve games. 2011 CFPA National Defensive Performer of the Year Whitney Mercilus led D-I FBS defenders in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (9). 2011 CFPA Defensive Back Trophy recipient David Amerson led D-I FBS defensive backs in interceptions (13), touchdown returns (2), and return yards (205). 2011 CFPA Kickoff Specialist Trophy recipient Quinn Sharp (114 kickoffs, 61 touchbacks, 68.5 yards per kickoff average) became the first two-time CFPA recipient, earning the award previously in 2009.

2011 CFPA D-I FCS National Performer of the Year Taylor Heinicke (29 total touchdowns, 3.22 touchdowns per game, 7.77 yards per pass attempt, .33% interception rate) completed 25 passing touchdowns with only 1 interception in 307 attempts. Heinicke was responsible for 305.3 total offensive yards per game and added a 64-yard punt in the D-I FCS playoffs that was downed at the opposing four yard line. Heinicke became the first FCS player to earn CFPA National Freshman Performer of the Year, CFPA Quarterback Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year honors in the same season.

Barbara Scott et al (No. 2010-18580, District Court of Harris County, Texas, 165th Judicial District) ATA reconstructed a motorcycle and 18 wheeler accident involving our client, Crete Carriers, proving that the motorcycle involved was traveling at excessive speeds.

Deirdre Worley et al v. Contract Transportation et al (No. AP-10-306, District Court of Leon County, Texas, 12th Judicial District) ATA, in defense of Sherwin Williams, determined vehicle position, performed line of sight testing and road and highway design studies in an accident involving an 18 wheeler and a hay trailer.

Manuel Tezanos et al v. Boss Hoss Cyles, Inc. (No. 3:09-cv-0284, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, Galveston) Senior Engineer, Ed Fritsch, performed a mechanical analysis of the strength of and materials used in an axle of a motorcycle involved in a crash.

United States Coast Guard v. BM3 Paul A. Ramos (No. 1-10, Eleventh Coast Guard District)

ATA performed extensive visibility testing on a seven-ton Coast Guard patrol boat, proving that for a great portion of the operating range, there were significant blind spots while piloting the 33 foot vessel. Seating and standing eye height studies also confirmed the pilot’s inability to properly see from the helm. American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards formed the basis for the testing. Additionally, ATA Associates did light testing to examine additional visibility issues, finding that the shore lighting hampered the operator’s ability to identify boat traffic.

Robert M. Hines vs. Terra Nitrogen, Limited Partnership (No. CJ-2009-847, District Court of Rogers County, Oklahoma) ATA Associates built physical models for the courtroom of an explosion at a chemical plant that occurred during a routine maintenance cycle.

Kimberly Tompkins and Sandra Tompkins v. Chaparral Steel Midlothian, L.P., ET. AL.(No. 71927, District Court of Harris County, Texas, 40th Judicial District) The primary cause of a steel mill explosion was incorrectly attributed to molten lava melting hydraulic hoses. ATA engineers and metallurgist inspected the plant and analyzed fluids and found the primary cause of the explosion to be a natural gas leak.

This year’s budget will see wine drinkers suffer again

Essential Fine Wines have today issued a statement saying that the government’s war on the drinks industry with excessive duty hikes will not help the problem of binge drinking but will only drive another nail in the coffin for British companies and hurt the pockets of law-abiding social drinkers in these testing economic times.

In Alistair Darling’s Pre-Budget statement, despite the promised VAT cut from 17.5% to 15%, the duty on alcohol would also rise by 8%. This 8% duty rise has ensured that all wine, beer and spirits prices will once again rise above the rate of inflation in the hope that an extra £1.5 billion in tax will be raised from drinkers over the next three years.

Critics of the latest tax increase have claimed that the Chancellor is penalising law-abiding drinkers for the behaviour of a minority of irresponsible binge-drinkers.

A spokesperson from Essential Fine Wines commented;

“The nation’s binge-drinking culture, said to cost £20bn a year, is being tackled by both ineffective and expensive government schemes, such as drinks labelling, but mostly by price hikes which effectively price-out people’s ability to afford and enjoy alcoholic drinks.”

“They are targeting large numbers of middle-class couples who enjoy a bottle of wine over dinner in addition to the targeted very small minority of lager louts who cause chaos in town centres.”

Jeremy Beadles, chief executive of the WSTA has condemned the recent government move and said:

“This year he will have increased tax on alcohol by a massive 17 per cent, hurting consumers when they have little else to cheer about.”

Although doctors and addiction groups have welcomed the increases in alcohol duty, saying it would help cut down on problem drinking, there is evidence to suggest that the price of drink is not a determining factor to the binge drinking problem. New research from Datamonitor has suggested that the social aspect of drinking is so important for British consumers that they are willing to put up with the higher prices charged in pubs, bars and clubs. British drinkers are among the biggest spenders on alcohol in Europe, spending on average £1,272 per person per year.

Coupled with the increase in duty on alcoholic beverages, government strategies have purposefully targeted all consumers of alcohol. Caroline Flint the government’s health minister has widened the focus beyond teenagers and binge drinkers.

“We want to target the older drinkers, those that are maybe drinking one or two bottles of wine at home each evening. They do not realise the damage they are doing to their health and that they risk developing liver disease,” a Whitehall source said.

The public funded campaign purposefully covers everything “from out-of-control revellers in city centres on a Saturday night to people regularly cracking open too many bottles of wine at home on weekday evenings”.

However, critics say that these government schemes do not tackle the cause of the problem and are a serious waste of public money in difficult economic times. Josie Appleton, of the Manifesto Club, a civil liberties group, has said “Binge-drinking is a problem to do with drinking to escape.”

“The vast majority of drinking is not a problem and a bottle of wine over dinner for two is perfectly normal”

“By calling everything binge-drinking you miss the point.”

Kevin Allen, founder of Essential Fine Wines openly condemned the government’s current stance and has said that:

“There are undoubtedly growing numbers of people turning up in hospital with drink-related diseases and injuries. This is unacceptable and stretches our National Health Service unneccessarily in difficult times. However, I would like to know how many of these incidents were due to middle-aged couples ‘binge drinking’ 3 large glasses of wine with their meal at home.”

“We need to support our own businesses in these difficult economic times. With ever increasing price hikes people will just travel to France to purchase wine and other products, where wine is taxed at 2p per bottle instead of over £1.20 in this country. Then the government will receive no income at all and our businesses will be affected too.”

“With these price increases the government is lumping all drinkers together into the anti-social bracket. In my mind there are two distinct types, those that drink for the taste of the drink and those that drink for the effect that consuming the alcohol gives them. I believe that we should target each group differently.”

Recognizing the Problem

The first step in the recovery process is recognizing the problem. This can be challenging when it comes to binging because you may not engage in this activity on a regular basis. It can be difficult to recognize that you have a problem with alcohol when the negative experiences happen sporadically.

Recognition requires some objectivity that can be difficult from your perspective. Many people easily fall into a state of denial when it comes to band habits. The need to quit binging on alcohol may not be as obvious as you think.

You know that this situation is a problem once you recognize a pattern. You drink in excess nearly every time you have an opportunity. You look at mundane occurrences—like finishing a workday—as a glorious opportunity to celebrate with alcohol. You find it acceptable to consume five or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting.

Help Overcome Binging

It’s very important to get the help that you need because binging on alcohol has serious ramifications on your cognitive, emotional and physical being. You may be familiar with the immediate physical consequences of inebriation and loss of inhibitions. This state doesn’t last long and is followed by headaches, stomach upset and a whirling dizziness that can prevent you from functioning normally the following day.

Emotional consequences are nearly as severe as the physical ones. You lack control and judgment when you are under the influence and this makes it impossible to make good behavioral decisions. Your poor decisions may have a serious impact on your interpersonal relationships and your reputation.

Cognitive abilities suffer as well. People who practice binge drinking in spurts have more problems with cognition and memory than people who drink every day in moderation. The problems with cognition also have serious implication on your personal life and your career.

Stop Binge Drinking

You can quit the cycle by breaking the habit of binging on alcohol. When you look at the problem as a simple habit, it becomes much easier to control. With the help of self-hypnosis, you can put yourself into a frame of mind that can lead you to success.

Speaking in front of a packed audience at the Search Marketing Expo – SMX Advanced conference Wednesday, Dr. Qi Lu officially announced the launch of Bing, Microsoft’s newly branded search engine. “The best way to predict the future is to create it,” said Lu, President, Online Services Division at Microsoft. “Bing is the first step in a long journey.”

Danny Sullivan, editor in chief of Search Engine Land, asked Lu more about the rollout, Microsoft’s decision to re-brand its search products, and how Bing will differentiate itself from other search engines.

“It’s very important that we have a brand that only represents search,” said Lu. When looking at key success factors at other search engines, “companies in the search space that do well tend to have a strong brand that represents just search,” said Lu. “It’s very important that we have a search brand.”

The name itself came after an extensive process that focused on coming up with something that would be short, easy to pronounce, and easy to come up with the correct url. The Chinese translation, he said, means “very certain to respond.”

Lu went on to say that Bing will differentiate itself by its ability “to fulfill user intent faster,” he said. Search results will no longer be delivered as 10 links per page, but will be offered in web groups based on presumed user intent. A search on Seattle, for example, would deliver results in groups such as weather, restaurants, attractions, etc.

According to Lu, the rollout of Bing, which has been followed carefully by search marketers, is going well. “So far, so good,” he said, noting that there are already 20,000 friends Facebook and 16,000 followers on Twitter. The search experience in the next few years can be a lot more competitive,” he added. “More competition and more choices is a good thing for everybody.”

Why new users would switch to Bing?

Last month, it was reported that Microsoft’s new Bing search engine is growing faster than any of its search competitors in the top 10. Bing happens to be a very viable search alternative to Google and offers several advantages that Google cannot compete with at the moment. Here are some features that enhance search experience for the users:

1.    Travel Insight with Farecast technology: It helps for searching flights, hotels or other travel arrangements by providing you with the information to make smart decisions. The search engine analyse more than 175 billion airfare observations and predict whether the price of a flight is going up or down using the technology acquired from Farecast. It also provides a recommendation of either “Buy Now” or “Wait,” over the next seven days.

2.    Bing Cashback Offer: It provides benefit to the user, who first search a product with Bing and then go for buy. Depending on the deal, your purchases could benefit you upto 30% of the purchase price back in cash form. Also, the search engine offered double cashback rewards for August, but they had to stop the scheme in between due to high demands.

3.    Bing Visual Search: The new technology allows visitors to filter their search enquiries for structured results through data-grouping image galleries making it not just a search engine, but a “decision engine.” At present, it is only available in US.

4.    BingTweets: The new service from the search engine was initiated on July 14, 2009 with the social website, Twitter and Federated Media. It provides real-time information and trendy topics to the viewers.

5.    Enhanced Search: Bing also provides something extra as compared to its competitors, for example options of enhanced view and preview windows for results. With these features, users can view the content of the search without clicking on the url. Also, the enhanced view directs the user to Wikipedia content without leaving Bing.

It aims to clean up the smorgasbord of results thrown at users when searching for a solution on the Web to allow users to make decisions to their not-so-simple questions like ‘Where to go for dinner?’

Since drawing excitement as ‘Kumo’ with some of its features revealed on the Microsoft blog in March, Microsoft has since renamed their new search engine Bing. “The name is short, it’s easy to say, it works globally,” quipped Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer.

Bing might find it an insurmountable battle with search engine giant Google though. According to research group comScore Inc, based on the US search queries in April, 65% of searches were ran on Google, with Yahoo coming up a distant second with 20.4% and Microsoft managing a disappointing 8.2%.

Acknowledging the tough competition, Microsoft hasn’t set its sights on beating the giant. Instead, Mike Nichols, a general manager in the search department said: “We want to capture a unique position in consumers’ minds. They need to know why is it that they should use this product.”

While chances are Microsoft will not get a bite of the Google pie share, Bing might just succeed at attracting some of Yahoo’s users. It aims to do so with a set of features that makes it stand out against its competitors.

Unlike Google, related search results are placed in a left column instead of at the bottom of the page, together with a bar of links running down the left side of the search results page that aim to help organise results. It also keeps track of recent searches and enables users to email links from that search history or share them on Facebook.

Instead of being directed to another site based on the search results, users looking to shop or check airfares online will find the information they need on the Bing result page itself. A search on airfare will bring up results from Farecast which features the Price Predictor that charts the best time to buy an air ticket so as to get you the biggest savings. Bing makes shopping a convenient experience by bringing together price comparisons, images and reviews, not unlike Amazon.com. What’s more, it claims to get consumers cash backs from hundreds of online retailers.

Bing also reassures the user looking for medical information online by providing results from the top credible medical sources in the world which you can trust. It also refines the results on local searches and allows you to filter your results so you get what you want instead of having to sift through everything a search engine would usually throw at you.

Although the search engine market is already saturated with big players like Google and Yahoo and country-specific search engines favourable with the locals, it remains to be seen if Microsoft Bing’s fresh offerings have the ability to pave its way up the charts to bring it face to face with Google.

Bing has some nice features that differentiate it from the other search engines. Once a term is searched for it offers refined search terms down the left hand side of the page. For example if someone search for Times, the results that appear at the top of the page are World Time Server, a Wikipedia page about time, and Time Magazine’s site. In addition on the left hand side of the page are a list of options, including Train Times, Radio Times, Time Online (the Times newspaper site), and World Time. This allows the visitor to refine their search so it is more specific to what they are looking for. Once they refine their search they have further options within this new search. So if World Time is clicked on, option such as World Time Zones, World Time Difference and World Time Server appear. In some ways this serves a similar role to Google Suggest, where options appear under the search box as you are typing a term into Google. The advantage Bing’s version has is that it goes deeper than just the original search. Research shows that it can take a long time to find what you are searching for, and this is one way that Bing is attempting to make that long search shorter. Users want relevance from their search results and help with complex searches, and to a certain extent this feature helps.

Something that Bing considers important is having a more locally focussed search engine. They aim to make the US version much different from the UK version and the other territories. For example if someone is searching for Victoria in the UK version, they are unlikely to want returns about Victoria in the mid West of America, Canada or Australia. The UK version will therefore return results referring to Victoria in London or Queen Victoria.

Another feature in Bing is that you can hover the mouse cursor just to the right of the results, and a blurb about the site appears. This consists of some text that describes what is in the site. This can save the visitor time as there is no need to go into sites that doesn’t offer what you are interested in.

Something that Bing is attempting to develop is a Fair Price Predictor for flights. This will tell users if a particular flight is likely to go up or down in price. This will aid the user, as they can then wait to book if it is predicted that the price will decrease, or book immediately if it is predicted to rise. Microsoft claims that this will be 80% accurate.

But, as much I’m a tech guy and an early adopter, I never bought a gadget because it was “cool.” I am too pragmatic and always analyze the usefulness of a gadget before I buy. And like you, I’m too busy to play around with gadgets. I need a gadget that saves, not costs, me time and money.

So when the iPad was introduced, I did my usual research to evaluate the product’s usefulness in my daily life. There is plenty written about the iPad’s “cool” features, design, and potential, and a fair bit written on its technical shortcomings. But, not so much written about its actual usefulness in daily life. With many people now asking me “how do you like your iPad,” I figure I would just write this article to help others determine if it is right for them – after all, it’s not a cheap buy.

Visual Design
As with most Apple gadgets, the iPad is certainly a beautiful product to look at. Similar to the iPod and iPhone, it’s like buying a piece of jewelry. The iPad 2 further improves on the original design.

Feel
I find the iPad awkward to hold. This was a surprise to me since it looks so sleek. But, with its weight and rounded edges, it doesn’t feel comfortable. And, the more I try to grab it, the more likely my thumb will activate the touch screen in undesirable ways. Adding an optional case helps. For the iPad 1 I have Apple’s case, and it’s functional but, personally, I don’t like the look and feel of the material. The iPad 2 comes with the sleek new magnetic cover design – neat but it only covers the screen (which may be fine for some perhaps).

Features
While I could write about the touchscreen, 3G, or its many other features, the features really only matter if you find the apps that you want to use. And, that’s too personal a choice for me to lend an opinion here.

Price
The low price of technology today is amazing, so when evaluating the price of the iPad, I have to do so in comparison to other technologies. A somewhat-close comparison today (in terms of portability, anyway) is likely a netbook — one of those mini notebook computers that have recently become popular. Netbooks are available for half the price of the iPad, making the iPad seem expensive for a device that in some ways doesn’t do as much. Although, it could be argued that even though the iPad does less, what it does well, it does very well. So, it comes down to what you need the gadget for, and whether the iPad or a netbook better serves that need. Other new gadgets are entering the market, so there will be more options available.

Easy to use
It’s the easiest-to-use computer you will find, period. For people who don’t need the full capabilities of a conventional computer, the iPad is a perfect solution. If you have ever taught someone how to use a computer, you know how difficult it can be for an inexperienced person to navigate a computer operating system. Not so with the iPad. The learning curve is refreshingly gentle. In my mind, this same simplicity is what drove the success of the iPhone, perhaps more so than its multi-touch display and other innovative features. (iTunes on the other hand is another story; more on that below.)

Optimized for touch
The iPad is designed as a touch device, so the interface is made for finger interaction. Tablet computers that use conventional operating systems (like Windows 7) are clumsy to use by comparison. The onscreen keyboard is quite good as well (although, power users will likely still want to have the optional wireless keyboard).

Convenient to use and fun
It’s a great device to pick up and just start “doing.” And, it’s easy to share with others nearby. You will find yourself reading/watching/playing just for the heck of it. It’s kind of fun.

Long battery life
Compared to a conventional computer, the iPad gives you many more hours of use between charges.

Inexpensive and amazing software that is easy to install
Most iPad apps sell for under and can be installed with a single click. And, there are many amazing apps that take full advantage of the tablet format.

Handwriting is terrible
Although I have looked, I have yet to find a good handwriting app. And, I don’t think I will because the iPad’s capacitive touch screen only works with a stylus that has a blunt sponge-like head (designed to mimic the electrical touch of a finger). This makes handwriting awkward for anything other than a few short words at a time with very large letters. Conversely, my Dell tablet PC with Windows 7 and OneNote allows me to use a typical pen-like stylus quite comfortably. I was hoping the iPad could replace my paper notebook, but not a chance.

Drawing is awkward
Similar to handwriting, drawing with an iPad lacks precision. I’ve seen impressive drawings created by talented people using the iPad. But, I suspect that you have to be a very talented and patient artist to find it useful for drawing.

Lack of Flash support
If you really want the full Internet, you need Flash. Too many websites rely on it (and for more than just games or animated banners). Maybe things will be different in 5 years time, but today, the lack of Flash support means I have to forgo much of the Internet that I find most useful. Apple has publicly suggested that the iPad will never support Flash. It’s an issue.

Copy and Paste is cumbersome
I frequently need to copy and paste text. While the iPad has this capability, it is slow and cumbersome to use, prompting me to jump frequently to my notebook computer to send an email or post a website comment.

No camera on iPad 1
Not having a camera limits the usefulness of the iPad 1 as a device to have around the home and on the go. Being able to capture impromptu photo moments is an important benefit of a mobile device. iPad 2 solves this problem with the addition of front and back cameras, similar to the iPhone 4.

Fingerprints are everywhere
The display is nice, but when you shut it off it looks like you were finger painting on it. A small but annoying inconvenience common to most touch devices.

Short power cable
It’s very short. (An extension is available as a separate purchase).

Finding the right apps is difficult
There are free apps and there are apps you must buy to try. It would be helpful if most apps were provided on a free trial basis, but it seems only a few apps are available this way. Luckily, most prices are quite low, so the risk of buying something that you don’t like is manageable. Still, who wants to buy five cheap apps just to find the right one?

iTunes is required
The iPad locks you into using iTunes to manage your music, photos, and other content. While having a single application to manage content has its benefits, it can be very inconvenient at times (and costly). And, you have to have a computer to use it and enable your iPad for the first time. Maybe it’s just me, but I have always found the iTunes interface confusing and the program painfully slow, not to mention the frequent and annoyingly-large minor upgrades. iTunes is surprisingly one area where Apple’s design sensibilities continue to fall short.

The iPad is essentially a large iPod Touch or iPhone without the phone. Its larger size makes it more useful at home than smaller mobile devices. It is more convenient (and fun) than a notebook, netbook, or tablet computer, but falls short in important ways. While using the iPad, I have to frequently run to my computer to send an email, browse a website, watch a video, or do “real work.” For those who do not need the capabilities of a full computer, it is a truly great option. For those who do not need the capabilities of a full computer, it is a truly great option. For those of you who do, it’s a nice gadget to have around the house for sure (especially if you have kids), but you can live without it – for now.

With recent Microsoft – Yahoo deals which combine their search and advertising abilities, there are large consequences for many webmasters. For me personally, I have ignored MSN, Live, and even the recent Bing for so long. It seems like a little too much problem to search-engine optimize my websites for such a small target audience of Microsoft search engines. Visitors from Microsoft search engines (whatever the name is) in my sites accounts for less than 10%, across all sites. Google generally make up about 60%-70%. There are exceptions, however. Some sites have more visitors from Yahoo than from Google.

However, now that Yahoo is going to hand their search capability to Microsoft Bing, it becomes essential that we take steps to ensure that our websites are ready for the change. Bing also seems to be well received by more Internet users, and there is possibility that they might be able to gain some market share from Google.

Generally, search engine optimization is almost the same, regardless which search engine you want to optimize for. However, there are also some additional details you need to take care of.

Here are some search engine optimization tips for Bing

1. Contents

Contents are king. Good contents are what differentiate good websites from the bad. Even if you disregard all other optimization tips below, you will still get much ahead compared than if you get all those below but neglect to have good contents in your site. Search engines want to be useful to the users so they can gain more and more market share. They want to find good contents that can satisfy and match the users need. All other criteria are actually additional way to find out how good and important a page is.

Good contents are:

1. Unique, not copied or duplicate from other sites

2. Useful and interesting information for website visitors

3. With more than 300 words of content (specially for Bing)

2. Page title

In all major search engines, page title is among the most important part of Search Engine optimization. However, it seems somehow that Bing pays more attention to the page title compared with other search engines. Order of the words does not matter much, but you must make sure to place your most important keywords of each page to the page title. Limit your page title to 80 characters the most. Shorter page title means higher importance on each word. And get different page title for each page. Concentrating on just a few key phrase will not get you a lot of visitors, even if each of them rank first. This concept is something called as long tail optimization.

Here is some additional tips from Bing webmaster community about page title:

-The closer a word is to the start, the more heavily weighted it is as a keyword. This is true for the bot as well as the reader.

- Keep the title text between 5 and 65 characters in length

- For greatest efficiency and consistency, write titles using this syntax: keyword phrase, category, website title (or brand)

- Make the title text unique on every page

- Do not use any of the following special characters in title text: ‘”{}[]()

3. Page URL: Domain name, sub-domain, folder name and file name

Yahoo and Bing place specially high importance on the page URL compared to Google. Try search hotels in dublin in Bing. Notice that 9 out of 10 results on the first page have the words hotel and dublin in the URL, while the only other one has the word dublin even though it does not contain the word hotel. Try the same search for hotels in dublin in Google. Notice now there are 7 results with the word “hotel” and “dublin” in URL, one result with the word “hotel”, while the other two does not have any of the word “hotel” or “dublin” in the URL.

Domain name is not something you can choose over and over or create one for each keyword, so if you have not started your site yet, think and choose a domain name that is most appropriate for your niche. That should be for your most important keyword/key phrase. If you have started the website and the domain name isn’t that ideal, then be it. You’ll be more than make up for it if you follow these search engine optimization tips.

Sub-domains and folder names are most appropriate for sub-category within your niche.

File name will the most specific keyword for each page, it should be somewhere along the page title. I would recommend slight variation from the page title to get the maximum result.

For example, if your website is about hotel, and one of your target market is hotels in dublin, the ideal URL would be dublin(dot)hotel(dot)com/compare.html for comparison between dublin hotels and dublin(dot)hotel(dot)com/information.html for information about dublin hotels. Of course, most of such domain names has been taken long ago, so you got to use some creativity in choosing a good domain name.

There are arguments on which one is more important between sub-domain and folder. I say, it is up to you. These are mere tools, you can choose to use either sub-domain or folder name. Or you can choose using both of them. Remember though, try to keep the URL as short as possible. Search engines loves short URL.

4. Link back and Link out

Link-back remains one of the most important aspect of Search Engine Optimization. Some webmasters swears by “If content is king, then link-back is the queen”. Link-back, or sometimes called inbound link, means the hyperlinks from other websites to our sites. Natural links from other sites (when they link to us in their article) without any reciprocal link (us linking back to them in return) remains the best valued link back.

Other methods like web directory submission or link exchange is still useful, even though it is having much less influence on Google. Bing is less stringent compared to Google for what constitute as valid link-back, so every link back to your site counts. However, remember that while it is easier for you to accumulate link-back, so are your competitors.

The most valuable links are not those link to your homepage, but linking to specific internal pages. That is called deep-linking.

Aside from link-back to your website, link-out (also called outbound links) to reputable sources is also a good way to improve your site ranking. Do a research and be careful of who you link to. You do not want to link to websites frowned upon by search engines. For example search for “site:cheatad.com” in Google, Yahoo and Bing. You’ll see there are pages indexed in all 3 search engines. If you see that a specific website does not have any page indexed, steer clear of them. Either those are new websites (which do not have much reputation point to pass anyway) or bad websites.

5. Use Bing Webmaster Center

Following Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer path, Bing have Webmaster Center for webmasters to manage and review their website and Search Engine Optimization effectiveness. No one knows what exactly causes a binge eating disorder but some factors include:

Biological. Biological vulnerability may play a role in developing binge-eating disorder. Both genes and brain chemicals may be involved. In addition, researchers are studying appetite regulation of the central nervous system for clues, along with gastrointestinal changes that might shed light on causes.

Psychological. Psychological and emotional characteristics may also contribute to the condition. You may have low self-worth and trouble controlling impulsive behaviors, managing moods or expressing anger.

Sociocultural. Modern Western culture often cultivates and reinforces a desire for thinness. Although most people who have binge-eating disorder are overweight, they’re acutely aware of their body shape and appearance and berate themselves after eating binges. The iPad employs Digital Rights Management intended to control certain software—including TV shows, movies, and apps—and prevent its transfer or use outside of Apple’s platform. Also, the iPad’s development model requires anyone creating an app for the iPad to sign a non-disclosure agreement and pay for a developer subscription. Critics argue Apple’s centralized app approval process and control of the platform itself could stifle software innovation. Of particular concern to digital rights advocates is Apple’s ability to remotely disable or delete apps, media, or data on the any iPad at any time.[106][107][108]

Digital rights advocates, including the Free Software Foundation, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and computer engineer and activist Brewster Kahle, have criticized the iPad for its digital rights restrictions. Paul Sweeting, an analyst with GigaOM, is quoted by National Public Radio saying, “With the iPad, you have the anti-Internet in your hands. [...] It offers [the major media companies] the opportunity to essentially re-create the old business model, wherein they are pushing content to you on their terms rather than you going out and finding content, or a search engine discovering content for you.” But Sweeting also thinks Apple’s limitations make its products feel like living in a safe neighborhood, saying, “Apple is offering you a gated community where there’s a guard at the gate, and there’s probably maid service, too.” Laura Sydell, the article’s author, concludes, “As more consumers have fears about security on the Internet, viruses and malware, they may be happy to opt for Apple’s gated community.”[109]

After over 6 years of going between periods of strict dieting and binge eating, I devised a simple 4 step formula that helped me control my binge eating problem. I managed to pinpoint why I was binge eating and came up with a few simple solutions to overcome them.

I hope this helps you as much as it did me.

4 Tips That Will Show You How To Stop Binge Eating

1. EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT

Forget the notion that a certain food makes you fat, because it doesn’t. Too much food makes you fat. You will lose weight as long as you eat less food then you burn off a day.

So then, wouldn’t it make sense to eat foods you enjoy?

From personal experience, I would often binge eat and ruin my diet on foods that I was forbidden from eating. Depriving myself of these foods caused my cravings to get so out of control that I would eventually crack under the pressure and binge…big time.

The good news is, it actually doesn’t matter what food you eat, as long as you eat less total calories then you need a day. So stop depriving yourself of foods that you enjoy, this only increase our cravings, and in turn increases our chances of bingeing.

2. EAT MORE

Low calorie diets cause our metabolism to slow right down, so we burn less calories. At the same time, these low calorie diets seem to increase our appetite. So we end up eating more and burning off less!

I know that depriving myself of feeling full and content after a meal, lead to me wanting, then needing to experience it more and more. After a while of resisting temptation, I would explode and not only eat enough to feel full and content, I would eat way too much and end up feeling sick.

In actual fact, you don’t need to cut calories so far to lose weight. To safely burn off fat simply eat 12-14 calories per pound of bodyweight spread out over 4-6 meals. This should also be more than enough food to avoid ever feeling hungry or deprived.

3. OVEREAT BUT DON’T BINGE

Let’s face it, overeating is fun. It’s enjoyable. Now is that really such a bad thing? It is our natural instinct. This goes way back to our caveman days. Do you think that when they made a kill, they portion controlled it, and put the rest in the freezer?

Stupid question I know, but it shows that overeating is instilled in our DNA from thousands of years ago.

What is great is that overeating actually helps us lose weight faster. You see, our body fat is stored on us for a reason, to help us survive in periods of food shortage. After a few days of reduced calorie eating our body starts to realise that there is a shortage of food coming in. It will then become more reluctant to burn it off for energy.

Giving it an abundance of calories occasionally gives our metabolism a much needed kick in the pants. This convinces the body that there definitely isn’t a shortage of food. It will then realise that it is pointless to hang onto our fat stores, and continue to burn it up at a faster rate.

So what I did, was every 4th or 5th day I would eat my calorie limit (see point 2) times 2-2.5. So if I was eating 2400 calories to lose weight, every 4th or 5th day I would try to keep my intake under 6000 calories. This was more than enough calories to satisfy my cravings, allowed me to enjoy myself socially and it still allowed me to burn fat.

I figured that if I didn’t do this, my cravings would soon become too strong and I would binge eat well over 10,000 calories.

4. CONTROL EMOTIONAL EATING

I know many binge eaters do so when they are stressed. I don’t blame them. However, try to find other non-food ways to relieve stress. Get outside and go for a walk, play with your children or your pets, go to the park or the beach. A hard workout is great stress-buster. Put on some music, have a hot bath, do some stretching or meditation. Anything, just try to find other areas to vent your stress.

No one is perfect. Next time you binge, think about how and why you do so. And think of how you can prevent it the next time. Learn from your mistakes. If your mistakes are similar to mine, then hopefully these tips can help you.

6. Challenge yourself to bite off more than you can chew, while learning how to spit.

Decide that you will stop your struggle with binge eating disorder.  Instead of expecting to change overnight, remind yourself that it will take time, effort, and patience.  The goal of overcoming binge eating is a big one – Know that and never forget it.  It’s going to be difficult, but when you take it step-by-step, it is easier.  

Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting to change so much at once.  Taking it step-by-step will be more successful than you think.  

Figure out little things you can do daily, weekly, or monthly to help build a strong foundation underneath you.  Start journaling.  Talk to friends.  Go for walks.  Fight the urge to binge.  Step outside of your comfort zone.  

All of these things will add up and produce big results.  You just have to take it one step at a time.

7.  Challenge yourself to be the person you dream of being.

What kind of person do you dream of becoming when you are binge-free?  What does that person look like?  How does that person act?  What does that person do instead of binge eating?

Write down all characteristics of the person you desire to be.  Don’t leave anything out.  Write down the types of people you will be friends with and what you will talk about.  Write down how you will dress.  

Just be sure to see yourself as the person you can be without binge eating.  Make sure to leave that out and challenge yourself to think about how your life would be when binge eating is not a part of it.

8.  Challenge yourself to fall in love with your quirks, flaws, and imperfections.

You cannot be a perfectionist while binge eating.  It just doesn’t work and probably leads to more bingeing.  Instead of finding and obsessing over your flaws, quirks, and imperfections, learn how to use them to your benefit.  Learn how to love yourself and embrace the qualities that you have that might be different than others.  

After all, being different is what sets you apart from everyone else… and isn’t that something to be happy about?  How boring would our world be if we were all the same?  

If we all had the same facial features…

If we all were skinny and looked the same…

If we all had the same bone structure…

If we all believed the same thing…

If we all enjoyed doing the same thing…

Remember, it’s our differences that make the world go ‘round.  Rejoice in your differences and find a different angle on your quirks so that you can start to love them.

9.  Challenge yourself to learn something new, do it well, and show it off.

When you learn something new and do it well, your mind opens up to other possibilities.  You will not become stagnant in doing just what you know.  You will step out of your comfort zone and this will do wonders for your self-esteem.    As you know, when you improve your self-esteem, you will feel better about yourself, which will help you believe in the fact that you can overcome binge eating disorder.

10.  Challenge yourself to have outrageous amounts of fun.

This is a fun one!  I mean, who doesn’t like to have fun, right?  

Try to add some fun in your life everyday and see how this will affect your total self.  I bet you will be happier and will laugh, instead of feeling sorry for yourself and wondering why you are still bingeing.  You need to have some fun!  

When you have fun, it makes you feel good.  When you feel good, you automatically feel better about yourself, regardless of what is going on.  It’s an instant booster for your mood, no matter what.  And, when you feel better about yourself, you might want to keep that attitude for as long as you can, which would mean having no reason to binge.

When you are having fun, you aren’t not going to think like “Wow, this is so fun… Maybe I should binge and totally destroy my mood.”  No!  Instead, you will feel so good about yourself and you’ll want to keep those good feeling going for as long as you can.

What is Binging?

When you think if binging, you may think of food automatically but this problem can affect alcohol as well. 60 Minutes Addresses Growing Binge Drinking Problem.

Choose Responsibility, founded in 2006 by former Middlebury College President John McCardell, was featured prominently in Sunday evening’s edition of 60 Minutes. The non-profit has gained significant traction in its efforts to address the pressing issue of alcohol abuse by young people.

Statement by John McCardell, president of Choose Responsibility: “Choose Responsibility commends 60 Minutes for taking a serious look at the growing underground drinking problem permeating our country, and underscoring the need for a broad national debate. We need to make it as ‘uncool’ to binge drink as it has become to drink and drive.

“Binge drinking is as serious an alcohol related problem today as drunk driving was two decades ago. The harmful, destructive and sometimes fatal consequences suffered as a result of this practice are crying out for more attention.”

“Not only are young people drinking illegally, they are doing so recklessly and dangerously. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, underage drinking contributes to 599,000 injuries, and 97,000 cases of sexual assault among college students a year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that approximately one in six teenagers have drunk so much that they blacked out and couldn’t remember what happened the night before. The results of this behavior are life threatening: More than 60% of the lives lost to alcohol are lost off the highways — over 3,000 per year. Certainly these lives are no less precious than those that occur as a result of drunk driving crashes, and the families of these young people grieve no less as a result of their tragic deaths.”

“Irresponsible drinking behavior is a serious problem that needs a serious solution. Our current approach and laws are not solving the binge drinking problem, and enforcement alone is not the solution.”

What can happen when you binge drink?

Binge drinking, also known as heavy episodic drinking, is the massive consumption of alcohol in a short amount of time. An average person is said to have binged, when their blood alcohol concentration reads 0.08% or more. For the blood to reach this level males consume 5 or more drinks quickly, a female 4 drinks. This is known as the 5/4 rule. Height, weight, and other factors can alter this rule. Extreme drinking has been defined as the rapid consumption of 10 or more drinks for males and 8 for females.

In the United States, although the legal drinking age is 21, most individuals are likely to binge drink in college. Studies show over half of male college students and 40% of females have participated in binge drinking in the past few weeks. Nearly one-third of freshman in college have experiences with binge drinking before returning home for the holidays. Unfortunately, excessive drinking is not limited to the over 18 crowd. It was been reported that a quarter of high school students have binged in the last month.

Some methods of binge drinking are shots, shooters, chugging, shotguns, funnels, and drinking games. In the United States, two popular games are quarters and pong, where failure to get one of these objects in a glass after bouncing it off a table leads to chugging beer or the consumption of a shot.

A common Canadian drinking game is Wizard Stick. After finishing a beer, the empty is stacked and taped underneath the current one. In New Zealand, Edward Wineyhands and Scrumpy Hands is a drinking game in which a 40 or 80 ounce can is duct taped to the hands and cannot be removed until completely consumed. The Pub Crawl first became popular in the United Kingdom where drinking establishments close by Midnight. Drinking from pub to pub, by the end of the evening, the binge drinker is crawling home. Botellon, passing a big bottle amongst a circle of friends in a public place, is common in Spain.

Regardless of the method, on the average, those who binge drink miss more classes, get lower grades, are sexually irresponsible, have been accidentally injured or date raped, and have or developed health ailments. In addiction, most alcoholics or addicts at one time were binge drinkers.

After binge drinking, a person is likely to

1) Have an argument or altercation
2) Fall or Pass out
3) Vomit, perhaps choke to death
4) Get into an automobile accident or fatality
5) Overdose (Alcohol poisoning)

During a blacked out state, urination on oneself is common. In extreme cases, however, a binge drinker’s bladder can rupture and cause septic blood poisoning.

When asked about his binge drinking experiences The Unknown Drunk replied, “I used to drink hard and fast… If I got drunk fast, I thought everyone would think I was cool. Thinking back, I just looked like a drunken idiot.”

Today, there is a movement in the United States to return the legal drinking age back 18.

”I was legally allowed to drink at 18,” the Unknown Drunk continued. “Maybe that’s why I started drinking heavy by the time I was 12.”

In a recent competition run by Microsoft to promote recently improved ‘decision engine’ Bing, online marketing agency atom42 outperformed larger rivals to win ‘blingin’ prizes.

To coincide with Microsoft’s TV campaign demonstrating the benefits of their improved engine, the company’s UK advertising arm adCenter launched the intriguingly named ‘Bling it’ competition.

‘Bling it!’ set out to raise awareness of the search engine and showcase its real potential as an advertising platform among UK media agencies. Participating agencies were sent a new question each week which required the use of some of Bing’s more advanced features – points were awarded for each question answered correctly.

London agency atom42 saw off fierce competition from larger media companies, including Starcom and Mediavest, to win the top prize; an eye-catching Netbook, uniquely ‘blinged up’ with hundreds of Swarovski crystals.

Not content with topping the agency leaderboard, first place in the individual category was won by atom42’s Online Account Director Stacy Oakley, who also won a Netbook adorned with Swarovski crystals.

Oakley described the competition as “a great way to highlight all the features of the search engine,” adding, “at atom42, we’re always striving to be at the forefront of search and have the flexibility to take advantage new opportunities and developments as they arise.

“This competition was not only a great way of exploring some of Bing’s less obvious features and their implications for online marketing agencies like us, but was also brilliant fun!”

atom42 is a rapidly expanding online marketing agency based in London, boasting an enviable client list including the National Accident Helpline, match.com, and drinkaware.

Founder Andrew Atalla predicts sustained growth, insisting the online agency sets itself apart from larger agencies by taking a “truly holistic approach to online marketing” combining expertise in PPC and SEO with the ability to approach problem solving from the client’s perspective.

Microsoft claim that Bing helps avoid the information overload users can experience at the hands of other search engines. While it’s yet to be seen whether Microsoft’s improved offering can really draw users away from Google in the long-term, many industry experts see the potential impact of Bing’s advance for the world of online marketing and PPC advertising as huge.

Media agencies will, of course, keep a close eye on progress and initiatives like ‘Bling it!’ that engage the industry’s top companies can only help Microsoft’s cause.

The body builder with an eating disorder eats as a result of stress, shame, regret and guilt. In most cases the one with an eating disorder does not enjoy the food even but just fees compelled to eat some more. Eating disorders is a syndrome accompanied by disappointment in the self, low self esteem, high sense of guilt, stress, depression, anxiety, tension, nervousness and moodiness.

For the binge eater, foods can of various types especially junk foods. Oily foods are more often attractive, fries and the like, and therefore more often eaten during the binges. On the other hand, for the body builder with an eating disorder, the foods mostly ingested are carbs. These are frequently sugars and starches found in most snacks.

Getting over an episode of binge eating is very easy, since the next day after the binge is actually enough to amend the mess. An eating disorder however is a habit that takes every ounce of will power, support, determination and discipline. It takes time to correct an eating disorder since it most often than not, involves a complete, radical lifestyle change.
