The first ever Texas Distracted Driving Summit, hosted by United Services Automobile Association (USAA) in collaboration with Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Shriners Hospitals for Children, last month, held discussions in an effort to raise distracted driving awareness and reduce distracted driving related fatalities. The summit focused on decreasing texting while driving while also highlighting accomplishments within the past three years for reducing distracted driving fatalities in Texas. Guests included U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and the Insurance Council of Texas, who discussed dedicated plans to continue efforts to decrease distracted driving in Texas through passing legislation that would ban texting and driving throughout the state.

Houston city officials and other organizations throughout the state and across the nation have increased efforts to raise awareness concerning using mobile devices while driving. During National Distracted TxDOT launched their second annual statewide “Talk. Text. Crash.” campaign. On a local level, the Houston Fire Department, together with State Farm Insurance, Clear Channel Outdoor, the Houston Police Department and Council Member Ed Gonzalez, promoted the “Texting Distracts – Watch the Road!” campaign.

Houston personal injury lawyer Ben Bronston has seen many distracted driving cases and adamantly fights for those who have been in an accident due to distracted driving. “Governor Rick Perry vetoed House Bill 242 that would have banned cell phone use while driving in Texas, even though the legislation passed in both the House and the Senate. The Texas Distracted Driving Summit gave voice to a dangerous issue even after this legal defeat,” explains Houston auto accident attorney Ben Bronston. “Texans need to keep pushing to reform Texas distracted driving laws to protect the safety of drivers everywhere.”

During Distracted Driving Awareness month, several local, state and national organizations launched distracted driving awareness campaigns in an effort to increase awareness for motor vehicle safety and decrease auto accident fatalities. Since drivers between the ages of 16 to 20 years old lead in distracted driving fatalities among other groups, ahead of adult drivers ages 21 to 34, many campaigns target teens. This includes the “Distracted Driving Design Challenge,” by the U.S. Department of Transportation, and “Pledge to End Distracted Driving,” started by Joel Feldman, who lost his daughter to a distracted driver in 2009. Several of these organizations plan to keep adding to their safety campaigns and implementing new distracted driving campaigns throughout the year.

“On average, a person using their cell phone while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than a non-distracted driver,” Ben Bronston comments. “Passengers also play a vital role in motor vehicle safety, particularly with teens. Its proven teen drivers are less likely to cause a fatal accident if accompanied by an adult passenger; while a teenage driver is three times more likely to cause a fatal car crash when traveling with another teenager in the passenger seat.”

A bill passed this past January makes use of a cell phone by a commercial vehicle driver illegal in Texas. Even though, in the 2011 legislative session, Governor Rick Perry vetoed House Bill 242, legislation aimed at banning text messaging for all drivers in Texas. However, congress added two new restrictions in regards to using mobile devices while driving throughout The Lone Star State. These restrictions ban the use of handheld mobile devices in school zones and prohibit persons under the age of 18 from wireless communications devices while driving.

Distracted driving laws in place prior to the addition of the newer restrictions do not allow state school bus operators to use cell phones while driving if children are present, and during the first six months, driving permit holders may not use cell phones while driving. Some cities such as Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Galveston, Amarillo, Missouri City and Stephenville have extended distracted driving regulations within their communities. The Austin city council, for example, prohibits texting while driving throughout the city.

The summit was held at The Westin La Cantera Resort–Grand Ballroom in San Antonio, April 26, 2012. Other keynote features of the summit included medical experts on the types of injuries caused by distracted driving, presentations by distracted driving experts highlighting effective approaches for corporate strategy concerning electronic devices in commercial motor vehicles, law enforcement approaches and methods used to decrease distracted driving, top researchers on the dangers and statistics of distracted driving and stories by families affected by distracted driving collisions. Texas Distracted Driving Summit was free of cost for participants and complimentary meals were provided to participants.

After a pursuit through Denton County, Corinth Police arrested a suspect that resembles a bank robbery suspect. In searching the suspect’s vehicle however, they found multiple credit cards that were not in the man’s name. The chase started shortly after 4 pm on Friday October 21, 2011. The suspect led police through busy streets and neighborhoods, sometimes even hopping the curb to escape. Finally police threw down stop sticks and the man pulled over into an apartment complex and was forced out of the vehicle. No one was hurt during the chase.

PayScale, Inc. today announced The PayScale Index for Q1 2012, which tracks quarterly trends in compensation.

Quarter-over-quarter pay increases in jobs related to energy, particularly highly skilled ones, continue as the price of gasoline climbs higher and other mined commodities do well. Closely linked to the energy sector, workers in the mining, oil and gas exploration and utilities industries and in cities strong in these industries (like Houston) are seeing substantial pay increases.

While energy and mining salaries continue to increase, jobs related to food service continue to suffer. Annual pay changes for the food service industry and food service-specific jobs were negative this quarter: -0.2 percent for the industry and -0.6 percent for jobs. While these amounts may seem insignificant, when the national average is 1.4 percent, anything in the negative territory is severe.

“The clear salary winners for Q1 2012 are the workers in mining, oil & gas exploration and utilities,” says, Katie Bardaro, lead economist for PayScale. “However, previously hurting areas, such as transportation and construction, are showing promise in Q1 2012 as well. In both these industries, wages increased significantly over the previous year.”

Even though pay for engineering and IT jobs were flat in Q1 2012 and quarterly pay growth for science jobs was negative in Q1 2012, workers in these job categories have a solid salary foundation. Strong pay growth through 2011 still makes these job categories tops for annual pay growth. And, cities with a high presence of engineering, science and IT workers were also strong performers this quarter (e.g. Seattle and Philadelphia).

Adds Bardaro: “While economists still view the economic recovery as lukewarm, from a compensation perspective, Q1 2012 shows significant improvement as pay growth for this period reached a three-year high.”

PART 1: My fellow meteorologist friends and myself from the UK went to the states shortly after the devastating tornado outbreak in late April 2011. This storm was observed on May 1st in NE Texas. It produced a mesocyclone, a lot of cloud to ground lightning, and some interesting cloud formations. No tornado was observed, apart from the odd scud-funnel, but there were some local unconfirmed reports that this storm had produced. This storm is T0077 in the ravenstorm archive.

Friends and family of 16-year-old Marissa Bauman cannot contain their sadness. The thought of losing her was too much to bear for many of them as they broke down sobbing during a Friday night vigil. Dozens of people joined her sister Miranda in saying goodbye. “She’s like the only one I have left and now she’s gone,” her sister Miranda said. “I really don’t have anyone now so I’m going to really miss her; her smile, she lightened up my day.” Miranda said she was still shocked and saddened she’ll never see her sister Marissa’s smile again. “She was really a great person, everyone loved her,” she added. “She was a really amazing girl, I’m not surprised people are here giving their condolences.” On Friday night, dozens of Marissa’s friends and classmates gathered on the corner of Harvey and 21st Streets. A make-shift memorial marks where Marissa’s life came to an abrupt stop, when she was hit by a car on her way to school in the morning. Her best friend found about her the accident through a text message in school. “I just know I’ll see her in heaven one day,” best friend Madelyne said. “She’s just a sweet person.” Madelyne added that Marissa was a goal getter. “She went through a lot, she always stayed strong,” she said. “She never gave up. She never was negative, she was always positive.” Miranda said her family will have a viewing for her sister Marissa Sunday. It will take place from 3 to 7 pm at the Palm Valley Church in Mission.

PinnacleHealth surgeons performed a breakthrough procedure utilizing robots to assist in an Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion surgery last week. Surgeons used the da Vinci Si Surgical System which offers a revolutionary approach to complex surgeries. The innovative robotic spine surgery that was performed was able to reduce the patient’s incision size, hospital time and blood loss.

“Instead of approaching the spine through a relatively large abdominal incision, we were able to use the da Vinci robot to expose the spine and then use its better imaging capabilities to replace the disk,” said general surgeon, DO, Luciano DiMarco. “We have extensive experience in performing this procedure laparoscopically, but we wanted the da Vinci robot to take us one step further. We made history today.”

The 52- year- old patient, Victoria “Vicki” Siekerman of Carlisle, PA went home the day after surgery, 48- hours less than a traditional surgery and was moving easily post- operatively. The surgical procedure had no complications and Siekerman left with modest sized incisions.

“Overall, patients will experience less blood loss, less pain and a shorter recovery time and still have a great outcome,” said Dr. Beutler.

The da Vinci Si Surgical System provides surgeons with multi- angle views, something that standard laparoscopic and open techniques don’t allow.

In an anterior fusion surgery, the anterior lumbar spine is stabilized through a procedure where bones are fused together permanently either with a bone graft or an implantable cage.

Dr. DiMarco, William Beutler, MD, neurosurgeon, and Walter Peppelman, DO, orthopedic and spine surgeon, worked together with the da Vinci Si Surgical System to perform the spinal fusion surgery. DiMarco used the da Vinci robot to expose the spine, safely moving the bowels and blood vessels, so that Drs. Beutler and Peppelman could replace Siekerman’s diseased disk with an implant.

Since 2006, PinnacleHealth’s surgeons have used the da Vinci Robotic System for more than 1,300 surgeries. Kitchen cops discovered roach feces and dead roaches during the checkup, according to a report. The eatery was ordered to provide proof of a licensed exterminator treatment within 24 hours of the city’s visit. Areas of the kitchen also needed to be sanitized. Velma Suarez has been too embarrassed to smile lately because most of her teeth are missing but a Brownsville dentist, who did not want to be identified, offered to help Suarez with her dentures. Suarez first called Action 4 News claiming she spent 00 on dentures that were made too big for her. She said despite asking the dentist that did the work to fix them or return her money, she got nowhere and was stuck with the dentures. “I thank him (the dentist) for coming forth” said Suarez. It took her about a year to save up for the dentures by putting aside some of her disability check and Suarez said she currently doesn’t have that kind of money to pay for another set. She said the dentist’s willingness to help, could impact her life positively in more ways than one. “I try to stay away from people from a lot of people because of that, I don’t feel right you know….I feel like they look at me” The 48-year-old said she learned the tough lesson that people need to do more research before getting any dental or medical work done. Suarez told Action 4 News she’s hoping this dentist will be able to help her so that she can get back to the workforce.

George Hamilton IV (born July 19, 1937, Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is an American country musician. He began performing in the late 1950s as a teen idol, later switching to pop-country and folk music. On June 18, 1956, while a 19-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hamilton recorded “A Rose and a Baby Ruth” for Chapel Hill record label, Colonial Records. The song, written by John D. Loudermilk, climbed to number 6 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart. By 1960, “A Rose and a Baby Ruth” had attained gold record status for ABC-Paramount (which had acquired the song from Colonial). The B-side of the record, “If You Don’t Know”, revealed Hamilton’s ambitions to be a country singer. In late 1959, Hamilton moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee to further his work as a country musician. On February 8, 1960, Hamilton officially became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Later that same year, he began recording for RCA Records, having been signed by Chet Atkins. Hamilton’s breakthrough hit was the 1961 song “Before This Day Ends”. Wanted to note the Euless Police Officer did NOT cause this accident and this was not from any type of police chase. From what I gathered & heard one of the vehicles ran a red light and hit the second vehicle and that hit the third vehicle that was the police car stopped at the light. The driver of one of the vehicles was air lifted to the hospital by PHI of Fort Worth. The other driver unknown transport at this time, likely ground ambulance. The Police Officer was not injured and no word on if he was or was not transported to the hospital for basic evaluation. Will update as soon as the news story airs locally, but as of 9-10-2011 no report in any local paper. Video is shacky at times due to using an iPhone and they are real sensitive to movement. I did not have my pro gear with me as I was just out and about in my old Military truck enjoying the cooler day and saw PHI making a circle of the LZ and knew something was up. I had to turn around and was able to get PHI taking off. If you watch the guy to my left that gets blown back by the Helicopter taking off, that was because he was standing. I was kneeling down for a lower stance and better base because I know how powerful the down draft can be. The real estate network also counted 36 Miracle Offices among its ranks in 2011. To earn the status of Miracle Office, every real estate agent in that office must make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®.

The Children’s Miracle Network raises funds to help support the children served by its more than 170 associate hospitals across the United States and Canada. Funds raised by RE/MAX Northern Illinois directly benefit Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a regional center that specializes in providing top medical care for seriously ill children. The hospital provides this care regardless of families’ financial resources.

Laura Ortoleva, a spokesperson for RE/MAX Northern Illinois, said that the real estate network’s goal in 2011 was to raise $ 100,000 for Children’s Memorial Hospital. Charles M. Russell: Watercolorist, a rare exhibition of 16 watercolors by the iconic artist of the 19th century American West, will open at the Sid Richardson Museum on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, and run through Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Admission is free to the museum, which is open daily except major holidays. Visitors from all 50 states and 68 countries have toured the museum at 309 Main Street in historic Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth since its opening in 1982. “Charlie Russell’s watercolors will help people gain a greater appreciation for his skill as an artist,” said Mary Burke, director of the Sid Richardson Museum. “Although he is well known for his oil paintings, experts on Russell consider his watercolors to be among his finest efforts.”

Burke noted that the watercolors complement the museum’s permanent collection of paintings of the 19th century American West by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), and other artists of the same era, amassed by legendary Texas oilman and philanthropist Sid W. Richardson (1891-1959). The museum is recognized as having one of the most significant private collections of Remington and Russell paintings in the United States.

The exhibition at the Richardson Museum is a companion exhibition to the first major retrospective of Russell’s watercolors, Romance Maker: The Watercolors of Charles M. Russell, which also runs from Feb. 11 through May 13, 2012, at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Dr. Rick Stewart, a recognized authority on Russell, curated both exhibitions. Prior to his retirement, he was director and then chief curator of the Carter.

It is appropriate that the Richardson Museum’s 30th anniversary year feature an exhibition uniting the collections of Sid W. Richardson and his close friend, the legendary Fort Worth newspaper publisher, Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879–1955). The collaboration is the legacy of their friendship; in fact, Carter, who also collected Remingtons and Russells, encouraged Richardson to acquire many of the paintings in the Sid Richardson Museum’s collection.

Of the 16 Russell watercolors in the Richardson Museum’s exhibition, eight are on loan from the Amon Carter Museum, and the following eight rarely exhibited works are part of the Richardson Museum’s permanent collection: Roping, ca. 1925-1926; Roping the Renegade, ca. 1883; The Brave’s Return, ca. 1891; Breaking Up the Ring [Breaking Up the Circle], 1900; He Tripped and Fell into a Den on a Mother Bear and Her Cubs, 1910; He Snaked Old Texas Pete Right Out of His Wicky-up, Gun and All, 1905; A Bad One, 1912; and On the Attack, 1901.

The eight watercolors on loan from the Amon Carter Museum are: Crees Meeting Traders, ca. 1896; War Council, ca. 1896; Indian on Horseback, 1907; Indians Sighting Buffalo, ca. 1896; A Piegan Flirtation, ca. 1896; Caught Napping, 1898; Indian Fight, 1898; and Approach of the White Men, 1897.

For the exhibition at the Sid Richardson Museum, to help visitors understand Russell’s creative process, a display will illustrate a series of steps to demonstrate how he painted Indian on Horseback (1907), a work featured in the exhibition. The steps will include 1) the underdrawing, 2) applying general washes, 3) layering of colored washes to define shape, 4) using line for definition, and 5) adding highlights. In addition, “paint outs” of Russell’s watercolor palette will be included.

The museum’s education program offers students an opportunity to learn about the artists’ ideas, lives, and paintings, which reflected life in the American West in late 19th- and early 20th-century America. The Museum Store offers a special selection of gifts and merchandise in the spirit of the West.

The museum is owned and fully funded by the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which Mr. Richardson established in 1947 to support organizations that serve the people of Texas. Foundation directors and staff have sought to fulfill Mr. Richardson’s vision by providing grants to educational, health, human service, and cultural organizations.

Directors of the foundation are Edward P. Bass, chairman, Sid R. Bass, and Lee M. Bass; they are grandnephews of Mr. Richardson. Their mother, Nancy Lee Bass, is director emerita; their father, Perry R. Bass (1914-2006), was Mr. Richardson’s nephew. Pete Geren is president of the foundation.

On Sunday 22nd January the Shorncliffe Trust is launching the European Heritage and Commemoration Initiative, whose main aim is to encourage proactive support and maintenance of the graves and memorials of those who gave their lives fighting for this country in the UK and in Europe.

This initiative is hoping to encourage ordinary people, schools and communities to “adopt” a soldiers grave or memorial long forgotten by friends, family and society. The Trust has taken advice from Royal Parks and Councils who currently maintain the cemeteries that extra support would be welcome.

Chris Shaw, Chairman of the Shorncliffe Trust says “In light of the increasing theft and damage to graves and memorials, we are asking people if they would be willing to act as a surrogate family for those who no longer have visitors to tend their grave. This is a true ‘Big Society’ style project which unites the public with different supportive organisations under one umbrella.”

The launch event will be in two parts, firstly at the grave of Sergeant Baller in Brompton Cemetery, Earls Court and then at the Rifle Brigade Memorial in Victoria, Central London. The Trust will be laying a wooden marker at Sergeant Ballers grave and then laying a wreath at the memorial.

The planned event itinerary is to be as follows:

Many people believe that David Koresh (or the Branch Davidians) were responsible for the deaths of the 74 men, women and children who died in the inferno at Waco on April 19, 1993. This is the story that the FBI put out. It is a lie. The guns they had were legal. The local sheriff investigated and found no basis for complaints against them. These were law-abiding American citizens, even if they thought differently to most other folks. They trusted the US Constitution to ensure their political rights, but they were murdered by agents acting under the authority of the US government. Waco occurred under the presidency of Bill Clinton, with Janet Reno and Wesley Clark in supporting roles. Already back in 1993 the US government demonstrated its contempt for the American people by carrying out a massacre in order to “demonstrate” (on prime time TV) its supposed “authority” (a tactic favored by fascist governments). Following the usurpation of the presidency in 2000 by the psychopath George W. Bush, and the subsequent installation of the insane John Ashcroft as Bush’s Himmler, things became much worse. On 9/11 about forty times as many people were murdered as at Waco. In both cases the murderers have so far gone unpunished.

Waco: The Rules of Engagement is a 1997 documentary directed by William Gazecki about the conflict in 1993 between the Branch Davidians, a non-mainstream Christian group, and the FBI. It was nominated for an Academy Award.

2011 CFPA National Performer of the Year Matt Barkley (41 total touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, 294 passing yards per game) set a single season Pac-12 record with 39 passing touchdowns in twelve games. 2011 CFPA National Defensive Performer of the Year Whitney Mercilus led D-I FBS defenders in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (9). 2011 CFPA Defensive Back Trophy recipient David Amerson led D-I FBS defensive backs in interceptions (13), touchdown returns (2), and return yards (205). 2011 CFPA Kickoff Specialist Trophy recipient Quinn Sharp (114 kickoffs, 61 touchbacks, 68.5 yards per kickoff average) became the first two-time CFPA recipient, earning the award previously in 2009.

2011 CFPA D-I FCS National Performer of the Year Taylor Heinicke (29 total touchdowns, 3.22 touchdowns per game, 7.77 yards per pass attempt, .33% interception rate) completed 25 passing touchdowns with only 1 interception in 307 attempts. Heinicke was responsible for 305.3 total offensive yards per game and added a 64-yard punt in the D-I FCS playoffs that was downed at the opposing four yard line. Heinicke became the first FCS player to earn CFPA National Freshman Performer of the Year, CFPA Quarterback Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year honors in the same season.

The jury awarded the record sum of almost $ 32 million to the plaintiffs.

Michael Barbee, Individually and as Next Friend of Kristopher Allen Barbee v. Barbara Scott et al (No. 2010-18580, District Court of Harris County, Texas, 165th Judicial District) ATA reconstructed a motorcycle and 18 wheeler accident involving our client, Crete Carriers, proving that the motorcycle involved was traveling at excessive speeds.

Deirdre Worley et al v. Contract Transportation et al (No. AP-10-306, District Court of Leon County, Texas, 12th Judicial District) ATA, in defense of Sherwin Williams, determined vehicle position, performed line of sight testing and road and highway design studies in an accident involving an 18 wheeler and a hay trailer.

Manuel Tezanos et al v. Boss Hoss Cyles, Inc. (No. 3:09-cv-0284, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, Galveston) Senior Engineer, Ed Fritsch, performed a mechanical analysis of the strength of and materials used in an axle of a motorcycle involved in a crash.

United States Coast Guard v. BM3 Paul A. Ramos (No. 1-10, Eleventh Coast Guard District)

ATA performed extensive visibility testing on a seven-ton Coast Guard patrol boat, proving that for a great portion of the operating range, there were significant blind spots while piloting the 33 foot vessel. Seating and standing eye height studies also confirmed the pilot’s inability to properly see from the helm. American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards formed the basis for the testing. Additionally, ATA Associates did light testing to examine additional visibility issues, finding that the shore lighting hampered the operator’s ability to identify boat traffic.

Robert M. Hines vs. Terra Nitrogen, Limited Partnership (No. CJ-2009-847, District Court of Rogers County, Oklahoma) ATA Associates built physical models for the courtroom of an explosion at a chemical plant that occurred during a routine maintenance cycle.

Kimberly Tompkins and Sandra Tompkins v. Chaparral Steel Midlothian, L.P., ET. AL.(No. 71927, District Court of Harris County, Texas, 40th Judicial District) The primary cause of a steel mill explosion was incorrectly attributed to molten lava melting hydraulic hoses. ATA engineers and metallurgist inspected the plant and analyzed fluids and found the primary cause of the explosion to be a natural gas leak.

ATA Associates continues to produce three-dimensional computer models for the Ira C. Eaker Center for Professional Development at the Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. The models simulate on-base and off-base conditions and are used in teaching incident and accident response scenarios in the Air Force Incident Management Course in the Commanders’ Professional Development School.

Essential Fine Wines have today issued a statement saying that the government’s war on the drinks industry with excessive duty hikes will not help the problem of binge drinking but will only drive another nail in the coffin for British companies and hurt the pockets of law-abiding social drinkers in these testing economic times.

In Alistair Darling’s Pre-Budget statement, despite the promised VAT cut from 17.5% to 15%, the duty on alcohol would also rise by 8%. This 8% duty rise has ensured that all wine, beer and spirits prices will once again rise above the rate of inflation in the hope that an extra £1.5 billion in tax will be raised from drinkers over the next three years.

Critics of the latest tax increase have claimed that the Chancellor is penalising law-abiding drinkers for the behaviour of a minority of irresponsible binge-drinkers.

A spokesperson from Essential Fine Wines commented;

“The nation’s binge-drinking culture, said to cost £20bn a year, is being tackled by both ineffective and expensive government schemes, such as drinks labelling, but mostly by price hikes which effectively price-out people’s ability to afford and enjoy alcoholic drinks.”

“They are targeting large numbers of middle-class couples who enjoy a bottle of wine over dinner in addition to the targeted very small minority of lager louts who cause chaos in town centres.”

Jeremy Beadles, chief executive of the WSTA has condemned the recent government move and said:

“This year he will have increased tax on alcohol by a massive 17 per cent, hurting consumers when they have little else to cheer about.”

Although doctors and addiction groups have welcomed the increases in alcohol duty, saying it would help cut down on problem drinking, there is evidence to suggest that the price of drink is not a determining factor to the binge drinking problem. New research from Datamonitor has suggested that the social aspect of drinking is so important for British consumers that they are willing to put up with the higher prices charged in pubs, bars and clubs. British drinkers are among the biggest spenders on alcohol in Europe, spending on average £1,272 per person per year.

Coupled with the increase in duty on alcoholic beverages, government strategies have purposefully targeted all consumers of alcohol. Caroline Flint the government’s health minister has widened the focus beyond teenagers and binge drinkers.

“We want to target the older drinkers, those that are maybe drinking one or two bottles of wine at home each evening. They do not realise the damage they are doing to their health and that they risk developing liver disease,” a Whitehall source said.

The public funded campaign purposefully covers everything “from out-of-control revellers in city centres on a Saturday night to people regularly cracking open too many bottles of wine at home on weekday evenings”.

However, critics say that these government schemes do not tackle the cause of the problem and are a serious waste of public money in difficult economic times. Josie Appleton, of the Manifesto Club, a civil liberties group, has said “Binge-drinking is a problem to do with drinking to escape.”

“The vast majority of drinking is not a problem and a bottle of wine over dinner for two is perfectly normal”

“By calling everything binge-drinking you miss the point.”

Kevin Allen, founder of Essential Fine Wines openly condemned the government’s current stance and has said that:

“There are undoubtedly growing numbers of people turning up in hospital with drink-related diseases and injuries. This is unacceptable and stretches our National Health Service unneccessarily in difficult times. However, I would like to know how many of these incidents were due to middle-aged couples ‘binge drinking’ 3 large glasses of wine with their meal at home.”

“We need to support our own businesses in these difficult economic times. With ever increasing price hikes people will just travel to France to purchase wine and other products, where wine is taxed at 2p per bottle instead of over £1.20 in this country. Then the government will receive no income at all and our businesses will be affected too.”

“With these price increases the government is lumping all drinkers together into the anti-social bracket. In my mind there are two distinct types, those that drink for the taste of the drink and those that drink for the effect that consuming the alcohol gives them. I believe that we should target each group differently.”

Businessman Walter Williams is disappointed to learn his wife is sick and unable to come on a trip with him. She suggests that he take her cousin Jim instead. Recognizing the Problem

The first step in the recovery process is recognizing the problem. This can be challenging when it comes to binging because you may not engage in this activity on a regular basis. It can be difficult to recognize that you have a problem with alcohol when the negative experiences happen sporadically.

Recognition requires some objectivity that can be difficult from your perspective. Many people easily fall into a state of denial when it comes to band habits. The need to quit binging on alcohol may not be as obvious as you think.

You know that this situation is a problem once you recognize a pattern. You drink in excess nearly every time you have an opportunity. You look at mundane occurrences—like finishing a workday—as a glorious opportunity to celebrate with alcohol. You find it acceptable to consume five or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting.

Help Overcome Binging

It’s very important to get the help that you need because binging on alcohol has serious ramifications on your cognitive, emotional and physical being. You may be familiar with the immediate physical consequences of inebriation and loss of inhibitions. This state doesn’t last long and is followed by headaches, stomach upset and a whirling dizziness that can prevent you from functioning normally the following day.

Emotional consequences are nearly as severe as the physical ones. You lack control and judgment when you are under the influence and this makes it impossible to make good behavioral decisions. Your poor decisions may have a serious impact on your interpersonal relationships and your reputation.

Cognitive abilities suffer as well. People who practice binge drinking in spurts have more problems with cognition and memory than people who drink every day in moderation. The problems with cognition also have serious implication on your personal life and your career.

Stop Binge Drinking

You can quit the cycle by breaking the habit of binging on alcohol. When you look at the problem as a simple habit, it becomes much easier to control. With the help of self-hypnosis, you can put yourself into a frame of mind that can lead you to success.
